Know your lingo.
The words and abbreviations you'll see around electric bikes for kids, explained in plain English.
- Amp hours (Ah)#
-
A measure of battery capacity. Higher Ah means more energy stored, which usually means longer range. Balance bikes typically use 5Ah batteries, mid-size dirt bikes use 8–12Ah, and racing bikes use 15–20Ah. Ah alone doesn't tell you everything — you also need to know the voltage to calculate total energy (in watt-hours).
A
- Balance bike #
-
A bike with no pedals designed to teach children how to balance and steer before transitioning to a pedal or throttle-powered bike. Riders push off the ground with their feet and glide. Electric balance bikes add a small throttle-controlled motor for more fun once balance is mastered.
Example: The FXB03-12 Pro Cross is a 12-inch electric balance bike for ages 2 to 5.
- Brushless hub motor (BLDC)#
-
An electric motor built into the wheel hub that has no physical brushes. Brushless motors are quieter, more efficient, and last longer than brushed motors. All FXB bikes use brushless hub motors.
- Burn-in period #
-
The first few hours of operation when a new motor and drivetrain settle into their operating tolerances. During the burn-in period, range and performance may be slightly below the published figures. After roughly 5 to 10 hours of riding, performance stabilises at expected levels.
B
- Grey import #
-
A bike brought into Australia through unofficial channels, often from AliExpress, eBay, or marketplace listings. Grey imports typically lack Australian warranty support, have no access to replacement parts, and may not comply with Australian safety standards. FXB does not sell grey-import products — every bike is sourced through official supply chains with full warranty support.
G
- IP rating (IPXX)#
-
An international standard that describes how well a device resists dust and water. The first digit covers dust (0–6), the second covers water (0–9). FXB bikes typically carry IP54 or higher — protected against splashes and dust. No kids' electric bike is fully submersible.
Example: IP54 means protected against limited dust ingress and splashing water from any direction — fine for puddles and light rain, not for deep water.
I
- Lithium-ion battery (Li-ion)#
-
A rechargeable battery type that is lighter and holds more charge than older lead-acid batteries. Every FXB bike uses a removable lithium-ion battery. Typical charge time is 3 to 5 hours from a 240V power point.
L
- Motocross (MX)#
-
An off-road motorcycle sport ridden on enclosed dirt circuits with jumps, berms, and whoops. Kids' electric dirt bikes are designed for the same environment as traditional motocross — dirt tracks and practice circuits — but without the noise, fumes, or fuel of petrol bikes. Most Australian towns have at least one motocross or practice track open to electric bikes.
- Motor controller #
-
The electronic brain between the battery and the motor. The controller decides how much power flows based on throttle input, selected speed mode, and safety rules. A good controller delivers power smoothly; a cheap controller jerks and stalls. FXB uses programmable controllers so power delivery can be tuned per model.
M
- Pit bike #
-
A small motorcycle originally designed for moving around pit lanes at motocross events. Over time, 'pit bike' has become interchangeable with 'kids' dirt bike' in casual conversation. The FXB range fits what most people mean when they say 'electric pit bike' — a small off-road bike suitable for backyards, paddocks, or practice tracks.
- Pre-order #
-
A purchase made before stock physically arrives at the warehouse. Pre-order customers pay at checkout and receive their bike when the shipment lands. FXB pre-orders reserve your unit against the arriving batch and ship in order of payment date.
P
- Range #
-
The distance a bike can travel on a single battery charge. Range depends on rider weight, terrain, speed mode, and battery capacity. FXB publishes typical range per model on each product page — real-world range varies by 20 to 40 percent from published figures.
- Regenerative braking (regen)#
-
A system that recovers some of the kinetic energy lost during braking and feeds it back into the battery. On kids' electric bikes, regenerative braking is modest — it adds perhaps 5 to 10 percent to daily range — but it also provides a smoother deceleration feel. Not all FXB models have regenerative braking; check individual product pages for details.
R
- Seat height range #
-
The minimum and maximum heights of the saddle from the ground when adjusted. A wider seat height range means the bike fits a child across more growth. When fitting a bike to a child, the seat should be set so both feet can touch the ground at the lowest adjustment for new riders, or so only the balls of the feet touch for confident riders.
- Soft-start throttle #
-
A throttle mapping that ramps power up gradually when the rider first engages it, rather than delivering full power instantly. Soft-start prevents the bike from jerking forward and throwing a new rider off the back. Every FXB bike uses soft-start throttles as standard.
- Spare battery #
-
An additional battery purchased separately from the bike, allowing a rider to swap a depleted pack for a fresh one in under a minute and double their effective ride time. FXB stocks spare batteries for every model. Batteries should be charged indoors, stored at room temperature, and kept away from direct sunlight.
- Speed limiter #
-
A setting in the motor controller that caps the bike's top speed below its mechanical maximum. Unlike speed mode (which typically offers three preset levels), a speed limiter is an adjustable ceiling set in software. FXB bikes combine both — parents can choose a speed mode and additionally dial down a controller limiter for very new riders.
- Speed mode #
-
A setting on the bike's controller that caps top speed. Most FXB bikes have three modes — low, medium, and high — letting parents restrict speed for beginners. Mode is changed via a button or dial on the handlebar.
Example: Set the bike to low mode for kids under 6 or new riders, medium once they're confident, and high only with full supervision.
- Standover height #
-
The height from the ground to the top tube (the horizontal frame bar) when the bike is upright. When a child stands over the bike with both feet flat on the ground, there should be at least 2 to 5 centimetres of clearance between their inseam and the top tube. Standover height is one of the most important sizing dimensions for matching a bike to a child.
S
- Tether switch #
-
A safety device that cuts motor power when a cord attached to the rider's wrist is pulled. If the rider falls off, the tether disconnects and the bike stops immediately. Every FXB bike ships with a tether switch.
- Throttle #
-
A handlebar-mounted control that delivers power to the motor when twisted or pressed. A twist-grip throttle sits on the right handle; a thumb-throttle is a lever pressed with the thumb. Release the throttle and power cuts instantly.
- Torque (Nm)#
-
The rotational force a motor produces, measured in newton-metres. Higher torque means stronger acceleration from standstill and better performance on hills and loose ground. Torque matters more than raw watts for off-road riding, where pulling power matters more than top speed.
T
- Voltage (V)#
-
The electrical pressure of the battery, measured in volts. Higher voltage systems deliver power more efficiently and generally allow higher top speeds. Common voltages across the FXB range are 24V (balance bikes), 36V (mid-size dirt bikes), and 48V or 60V (racing bikes).
V
- Watts (W)#
-
A measure of a motor's continuous power output. Higher wattage means more torque and speed potential. FXB motors range from 250W (balance bikes) to 800W (racing bikes). Peak power can exceed continuous rating briefly.
- Wheel size #
-
The diameter of the wheels, measured in inches. Wheel size is the single best proxy for matching a bike to a child's age and height. 12-inch wheels suit ages 2 to 5, 16-inch wheels suit ages 5 to 8, 20-inch wheels suit ages 7 to 12, and 24-inch wheels suit ages 9 to 14+. Bigger wheels roll over bumps more smoothly but require more leg length to reach the ground.
Example: The FXB03-12 has 12-inch wheels; the FXB06-24 has 24-inch wheels.
